The Foundation at MRMC wishes to thank the Mission Jr. Service League for a community grant to the Children’s Services Department. This grant funded the purchase of several electronic game systems for use in Pediatrics. The Wii, and the Nintendo DS handheld systems, will not only entertain young patients during their hospital stay, but also enable their clinical caregivers to perform tests and other procedures with greater efficiency.
“A stay in the hospital is never fun for a child,”

All year, Vanessa Escobedo has been assisting me in the work of The Foundation. She's a gifted young woman pursuing her degree at UTPA. This semester she has to conduct her own fundraiser as a project for her Group Communications class, and she has chosen a rock concert to benefit our new Forensic Unit, named The S.A.F.E. Place at MRMC.
The S.A.F.E. Place is the only acute, forensic unit open 24/7 to victims of sexual assault and abuse in Hidalgo County. Since opening in December of

About 6 months ago, Evonne Lopez and I had a conversation regarding the need for this unit to serve the citizens of Hidalgo County. This led me to do my own research regarding the local incidence of violent crimes, such as rape and aggravated assault. This is what I learned: Texas law enforcement agencies reported an average of 339 violent crimes per day last year. This daily average accounts for 4 Murders, 22 Forcible Rapes, and 209 Aggravated Assaults in the Lone Star State.

The 3rd Annual Legacy Gala benefitting The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center will be held Friday, February 5, 2010, at the McAllen Convention Center. The always-popular Banda Metropoli will be returning to rock the night in support of the nonprofit hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and South Texas' only 24/7 dedicated NICU Transport Team.
Bet you didn't know that Cervical Cancer has a color all it's own; and it's own symbol: the polka dot. I didn't either until I began researching the topic for this year's 'Ladies First' Luncheon. Our keynote speaker, Christine Baze, has taught me plenty. This artist, activist and cancer-survivor will be sharing her story in words and music Thursday, October 15, 2009, as part of her mission to "Save the Hooch". Christine is a contemporary who is unafraid to speak the truth about this
Saturday, August 29, fifteen competitive 5-person teams met at the 4ERanch in Edinburg, Texas, to participate in this first annual fundraising event to benefit The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center. The weather was kind, by August standards for South Texas, and everyone was excited to meet 4-time Olympian Bret Erickson.
While we had intended for Bret to teach skills clinics to team members and sporting enthusiasts throughout the day, Bret provided one-on-one instruction to

The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center collected food to restock the City of Mission's pantry last week, as part of the 'Feed Our Friends' drive. The drive, in partnership with Renee's of Sharyland, more than filled the pantry, which was depleted due to the typical demands of summer time and the economic hardships facing many local families.
I am so happy breastfeeding now enjoys such popular support! I chose to nurse all of my children for a variety of reasons such as bonding with baby, improved brain development, and increased immunity to allergens and disease; not to mention, a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer for me. Of course, one of the best benefits has to include the rapid postpartum weight loss!
But seriously, there is no substitute for breast milk or for the boost it gives to babies, especially premature

In June, Tim McVey, CPA and CFO of Mission Regional Medical Center, Mrs. Nora Shah, Trustee of The Foundation and Chair of the Fundraising Committee, and I attended the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy's Annual Conference. It was the first time for each of us to attend an AHP event, and we learned so much! While Tim sat in on all of the Major & Planned Giving sessions, Nora and I attended the sessions on Leadership and Best Practices. Topics ranged from "Engaging Physicians"
