As your community-owned, nonprofit hospital, we are always asking for community support and donations for a special service line, equipment, or other critical need. This year, we need your help to buy a new ‘giraffe’ bed for very premature infants. Most NICU babies start in a warmer and are weaned to an isolette, as their condition improves; however, if there are any setbacks, the infant usually has to be transferred back to a warmer. The ‘giraffe’ bed rapidly transforms from a radiant
You may know Freebirds’ for rockin’ and rollin’ the world’s best burritos, but did you know they have a charitable division called Freebird’s World Works? Their motto is “feed your belly, feed your soul,” and they promote this message in every community in which they land.
Earlier this month, more than 500 people got to experience Freebird’s of Mission, before their grand opening, by making a $5 donation to The Foundation at MRMC. Thanks to you, we exceeded our goal and raised $2,800

The Foundation launched The Pink Brazaar this October with the help of Clark Chevrolet, BMP Radio, Avila Plastic Surgery, XCell Orthopeadics, Renee's of Sharyland, and countless community members and volunteers. Designed to be a brilliant spectacle, this educational and inspirational community art project culminated in a live bra auction at the International Museum of Arts and Sciences, on Friday, October 21. Thanks to those who attended the premier Pink Brazaar event, more than $5,000
What a great day! The Foundation had the pleasure of hosting more than one dozen school nurses who visited Mission Regional Medical Center to learn more about Forensic Nursing, and the services available at The S.A.F.E. Place. School nurses are a dedicated lot, and often the front line of protection for our children and community. Whether they are spotting 'pink eye' or head lice, they demonstrate care for their young charges daily--and sometimes the health issues they have to deal
Read More...Did you know the by products of child abuse and molestation, sexual assault, and rape of our youth are violence, substance abuse, self-mutilation, eating disorders, academic failure/school drop out, pregnancy, mental illness, juvenile delinquency, criminal activity, prostitution, disease, and the perpetration of abuse against others? Or that one in four girls will be the victim of sexual assault by her 18th birthday? This is a terrible trend and a one that not only destroys lives, but

A lovely group of ladies came to visit me at Mission Regional Medical Center (MRMC) on Thursday, March 3. Under the “leadership” of Ann Scott, activity director at Seven Oaks Resort, these industrious women delivered beautiful, hand-knit baby blankets, caps and booties for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as well as coloring books and crayons for Pediatrics. When asked what brought them to the hospital, Ann explained she had seen our “Wish List” for The Foundation @ MRMC online at
Our first child, Ryan, was born in a military hospital overseas in England, where everything went as planned—or as a first-time mother imagines it should, I guess. So we were caught by surprise when our second child, Bella, arrived early. We didn’t expect her until December, but she chose to arrive exactly one month before her due date on November 9th, 2010, at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.
The experience of pre-term labor was truly terrifying. But in the end, Bella Ruth Dandurand

There is no substitute for human blood. I can't help but laugh a little every time I say this to someone, because it sounds so macabre—but it's not. Life is a miracle, and the lifeblood that flows through all of us is, too. It's a substance Science has not been able to replicate or manufacture, so we simply have to share. At Mission Regional Medical Center, we have a constant need for the stuff! We need blood for elective procedures and emergency surgeries; we need blood to pull
The Foundation at Mission Regional Medical Center is seeking the following items on behalf of the patients for whom we care. As the nonprofit hospital serving western Hidalgo and Starr Counties, we rely upon community donations and support to meet many needs.
1) The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) needs knit baby blankets, caps and booties for our "Little Miracles." Many of them will leave the hospital with their families and return home to substandard housing that may or may not
The MRMC Transport Team does it, again! Our "angels" in jumpsuits, along with air and ground transport partners Western Flyers and ProMedic EMS, are bringing home Firefighter Zapata for 1/5 the cost of another air ambulance company. THANK YOU to everyone who is donating their time, talent, equipment, and expertise to care for this critically ill public servant. Thank you to Jay Cantu of Hot Kiss 106.3 for bringing this need to my attention. Thank you to my CEO, Javier Iruegas, for
Recently, I had the great privilege of visiting with Linda Ledray, R.N., Ph.D., SANE-A, FAAN. She is a living legend in the field of Sexual Assault Programs, not only in the United States, but around the world, where she has helped develop service provider programs for victims in places such as Haiti, Bosnia, and Cambodia. Linda has literally written the book on Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner programs, and founded the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN). This month,

The Foundation at MRMC wishes to thank the Mission Jr. Service League for a community grant to the Children’s Services Department. This grant funded the purchase of several electronic game systems for use in Pediatrics. The Wii, and the Nintendo DS handheld systems, will not only entertain young patients during their hospital stay, but also enable their clinical caregivers to perform tests and other procedures with greater efficiency.
“A stay in the hospital is never fun for a child,”
