Children’s Services has Got Game!

July 05, 2010

Pedi PatientThe Foundation at MRMC wishes to thank the Mission Jr. Service League for a community grant to the Children’s Services Department. This grant funded the purchase of several electronic game systems for use in Pediatrics.  The Wii, and the Nintendo DS handheld systems, will not only entertain young patients during their hospital stay, but also enable their clinical caregivers to perform tests and other procedures with greater efficiency.

“A stay in the hospital is never fun for a child,” states Edmundo Garza, RN, assistant clinical manager for Pediatrics, “But we can make it less painful. We can also make it less ‘traumatic’ by utilizing video games to distract children undergoing medical treatment.  We are grateful to the Mission Jr. Service League, and we are excited to have the game systems on the unit, because they will enhance our delivery of care, as well as the child's experience during his stay here.”

The Children’s Services Department at Mission Regional Medical Center is home to South Texas’ only hospital-based pediatric and neonatal Transport Team. The department also includes a state-of-the-art, Level II & III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a NICU surgical suite, and a Pediatric Step-Down Unit to meet needs of children transitioning out of an intensive care environment.
