S.A.F.E. for School

August 22, 2011

What a great day!  The Foundation had the pleasure of hosting more than one dozen school nurses who visited Mission Regional Medical Center to learn more about Forensic Nursing, and the services available at The S.A.F.E. Place.  School nurses are a dedicated lot, and often the front line of protection for our children and community.  Whether they are spotting 'pink eye' or head lice, they demonstrate care for their young charges daily--and sometimes the health issues they have to deal with are very, very serious.

While schools are normally a safe place for students, sexual assault can occur on campus, and students carry many of their 'personal' problems to class with them.  For this reason, school nurses need to be prepared to help student victims of child abuse, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence.  They need to know what resources are available to them, as well as the law, so they can perform their duties appropriately. Feedback from those in attendance was tremendous. What a great group of women we have serving our children in Mission CISD, Sharyland ISD, and La Joya ISD!

We are fortunate to have great professional partners in nursing, law enforcement and education that enable us to provide valuable information and in-service training to qualified personnel.  The S.A.F.E. Place is a focus area of The Foundation.  If you would like to learn more about Hidalgo County's only 24/7/365 acute, medical  forensic unit treating victims of violence, please contact us at 956.323.1102.
