Did you know the by products of child abuse and molestation, sexual assault, and rape of our youth are violence, substance abuse, self-mutilation, eating disorders, academic failure/school drop out, pregnancy, mental illness, juvenile delinquency, criminal activity, prostitution, disease, and the perpetration of abuse against others? Or that one in four girls will be the victim of sexual assault by her 18th birthday? This is a terrible trend and a one that not only destroys lives, but impacts future generations.
You don't have to look far to see the visible signs of social and individual devastation: girls are now the fastest growing segment of the juvenile "justice" system, i.e. the U.S. prison system. In order to create public awareness of The S.A.F.E. Place among the demographic that is likely to need it the most, we are pleased to announce The S.A.F.E. Place Public Service Announcement (PSA) Scholarship Contest. The Contest is designed to promote The S.A.F.E. Place at Mission Regional Medical Center, while creating awareness of the unit and its services among the demographic most likely to need it.
The contest is open to all students enrolled in high school in Hidalgo County. We are seeking original works for consideration in the PSA contest, with entries to be posted to a You Tube channel, and submitted to broadcast media throughout the Rio Grande Valley. The winning individual or team will be publicly recognized, and awarded a $1,000 scholarship prize. Students are invited to create their own PSA, using the script we have provided, in English or in Spanish. The deadline for the PSA contest is Wednesday, June 29, 2011.
