Wanted: Giraffe warmer

Posted by on Feb 23, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Wanted: Giraffe warmer December 28, 2011 As your community-owned, nonprofit hospital, we are always asking for community support and donations for a special service line, equipment, or other critical need. This year, we need your help to buy a new ‘giraffe’ bed for very premature infants. Most NICU babies start in a warmer and are weaned to an isolette, as their condition improves; however, if there are any setbacks, the infant usually has to be transferred back to a warmer. The ‘giraffe’ bed rapidly transforms from a radiant warmer to an isolette, and vice versa, giving us flexibility in a transitional situation, and an extra measure of timeliness in an urgent one. Fully loaded, these very special beds cost $40,000; so any amount you give would count toward our goal for this purchase! Close to 400 premature and critically ill infants arrive in our NICU, each year. They come from within our community and from across the Valley, for the state-of-the-art care available at Mission Regional Medical Center. Regardless of where they come from, we pride ourselves on being prepared to receive these ‘little miracles’ here, and give them a fighting chance at a healthy life. Won’t you join us in the fight by making a year-end donation to The Foundation today?...

Freebird’s Lands at MRMC November 22, 2011 You may know Freebirds’ for rockin’ and rollin’ the world’s best burritos, but did you know they have a charitable division called Freebird’s World Works?  Their motto is “feed your belly, feed your soul,” and they promote this message in every community in which they land. Earlier this month, more than 500 people got to experience Freebird’s of Mission, before their grand opening, by making a $5 donation to The Foundation at MRMC. Thanks to you, we exceeded our goal and raised $2,800 in 4 hours to support services provided to adult and child victims of sexual assault and abuse at The S.A.F.E. Place.  We are privileged to be their Premier Partner for 2011-2012, and grateful for the enthusiastic support of such a fantastic and flavorful organization. Like ‘The Foundation at MRMC’ on Facebook, so you will be the first to know about future opportunities to get your Freebird, and feel great about...

The Power of Pink

The Power of Pink November 01, 2011 The Foundation launched The Pink Brazaar this October with the help of Clark Chevrolet,BMP Radio, Avila Plastic Surgery, XCell Orthopeadics, Renee’s of Sharyland, and countless community members and volunteers.  Designed to be a brilliant spectacle, this educational and inspirational community art project culminated in a live bra auction at the International Museum of Arts and Sciences, on Friday, October 21. Thanks to those who attended the premier Pink Brazaar event, more than $5,000 was raised to support services provided at The Breast Care Center @ Mission Regional Medical Center. As the Brazaar traveled throughout Hidalgo County in October, it exposed the issue of breast cancer and promoted the message of early detection with clever, creative, humorous and memorable works of arts. Many of hese works, including the first Brighton Bra, by Renee’s of Sharyland, now belong to generous donors.  We wish to thank everyone who decorated and donated a bra, voted for their favorite, or bid on one at the Brazaar auction! Your contributions impact the health of our community and increase the resources available to care for community members through your nonprofit hospital. To learn more and to see the The Pink Brazaar video explaining this very special project, please visit us online.  We hope you will be moved to participate,...

S.A.F.E. for School

S.A.F.E. for School August 22, 2011 What a great day!  The Foundation had the pleasure of hosting more than one dozen school nurses who visited Mission Regional Medical Center to learn more about Forensic Nursing, and the services available at The S.A.F.E. Place.  School nurses are a dedicated lot, and often the front line of protection for our children and community.  Whether they are spotting ‘pink eye’ or head lice, they demonstrate care for their young charges daily–and sometimes the health issues they have to deal with are very, very serious. While schools are normally a safe place for students, sexual assault can occur on campus, and students carry many of their ‘personal’ problems to class with them.  For this reason, school nurses need to be prepared to help student victims of child abuse, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence.  They need to know what resources are available to them, as well as the law, so they can perform their duties appropriately. Feedback from those in attendance was tremendous. What a great group of women we have serving our children in Mission CISD, Sharyland ISD, and La Joya ISD! We are fortunate to have great professional partners in nursing, law enforcement and education that enable us to provide valuable information and in-service training to qualified personnel.  The S.A.F.E. Place is a focus area of The Foundation.  If you would like to learn more about Hidalgo County’s only 24/7/365 acute, medical  forensic unit treating victims of violence, please contact us at...

Video PSA Scholarship Contest

Posted by on Feb 23, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Video PSA Scholarship Contest May 19, 2011 Did you know the by products of child abuse and molestation, sexual assault, and rape of our youth are violence, substance abuse, self-mutilation, eating disorders, academic failure/school drop out, pregnancy, mental illness, juvenile delinquency, criminal activity, prostitution, disease, and the perpetration of abuse against others?  Or that one in four girls will be the victim of sexual assault by her 18th birthday?  This is a terrible trend and a one that not only destroys lives, but impacts future generations. You don’t have to look far to see the visible signs of social and individual devastation: girls are now the fastest growing segment of the juvenile “justice” system, i.e. the U.S. prison system.  In order to create public awareness of The S.A.F.E. Place among the demographic that is likely to need it the most, we are pleased to announce The S.A.F.E. Place Public Service Announcement (PSA) Scholarship Contest.  The Contest is designed to promote The S.A.F.E. Place at Mission Regional Medical Center, while creating awareness of the unit and its services among the demographic most likely to need it. The contest is open to all students enrolled in high school in Hidalgo County. We are seeking original works for consideration in the PSA contest, with entries to be posted to a You Tube channel, and submitted to broadcast media throughout the Rio Grande Valley.  The winning individual or team will be publicly recognized, and awarded a $1,000 scholarship prize. Students are invited to create their own PSA, using the script we have provided, in English or in Spanish. The deadline for the PSA contest is Wednesday, June 29, 2011.  You may download a copy of the fullPSA Scholarship Contest here, for the full contest guidelines, restrictions, and required forms. The S.A.F.E. Place is a place where healing may begin, and the pursuit of justice can start.  We look forward to receiving your PSA...
