Full Term or Pre-term, the NICU at MRMC is prepared to care for your baby well.

Thanks to the 2005 expansion of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Mission Regional Medical Center is proud to offer a 20-bed Level II and III intensive care unit, with 24-hour a day neonatologist coverage, for the highly-advanced care of babies with special needs. The skill of our experienced medical and nursing staff is bolstered by some of the most sophisticated life-saving equipment on the market, so you can rest assured your baby will receive the specialized care he or she needs.

In addition, the NICU at MRMC provides:

  • A clinical laboratory on the unit staffed ‘round the clock by Respiratory Therapists;
  • 24-hour coverage by a pharmacist experienced in neonatal pharmacology;
  • Direct access to and communication with the OB labor and delivery rooms, and surgical suites;
  • Immediate availability of stored, digital radiographs for transmission and review;
  • Dedicated rooms for isolation purposes;
  • Instructional and support services from an on-site, certified Lactation Consultant;
  • Access to the Mother’s Milk Bank;
  • State-of-the-art NICU surgical room for PDA ligation, oomphalocele repair, gastroschisis reduction/closure, GT placement, ad more;
  • Offices and an overnight suite for neonatologists;
  • Conference rooms for parent education;
  • Classical music program medically proven to accelerate normal growth and healing for premature infants, and the establishment of normal feeding patterns;
  • “Little Miracles Room” for parents to stay as they participate in the care of their newborn and prepare for discharge. This simulated home environment allows parents to gain knowledge and confidence for the tasks ahead in a safe setting, while enjoying the support and expertise of the NICU staff.

Quadruplets

Mission Regional Medical Center boasts the Rio Grande Valley’s only dedicated, 24/7 NICU Transport Team. This highly-trained team of nurses and respiratory technicians provides inter-facility transport for critically ill neonates and pediatric patients to higher level of care facilities across all of South Texas.

Housed on-site and on-call, the MRMC Transport Team is available to respond within minutes for travel by ground or air ambulance, as the case warrants.
